Evaluation on the tracer simulation under different advection schemes in the ocean model

Abstract Advection scheme is one of the core challenges in computational fluid dynamics, which restricts capacity model performance many research areas including oceanographic modelling studies. Here this study, we compared newly developed algorithm HSIMT (advection with High-order Spatial Interpolation at Middle Temporal level) well-known MPDATA (Multidimensional Positive-Definite Advective Transport Algorithm), 1-dimensional idealized simulation and 3-dimensional realistic river plume simulations. The was done a mainstream ocean ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System). results showed that test both can converge to analytical results, but converges much faster does not produce overshooting around sharp front. Accuracy also free from choice timestep, unlike MPDATA. In surface-trapped plume, great advantages. Results simulated by highly relied on resolution, when resolution high enough approached HSIMT. study could assist further understanding advection schemes promote developments models.
